Castel Kaldiff

It is located on a 354 m high Dolomite rock. The castle ruin Kaldiff, or Caldiff, towers above Mazzon above Egna.

Also this castle bearing the name Kaldiff or Caldiff was probably a monument that has been commissioned by the Lords of Enna, who were former proprietors of the court of Egna and had, in other words a good reputation. From the early 16th to the 18th century the castle was inhabited by the noble family called „Nobles of Payr“. They changed the castle to a pleasant residence. In 1797 or 1798 a huge fire interrupted life in the castle and from this point the castle started deteriorating.

Even if the castle today consists of ruins, it is rather a castle in its structure. The donjon collapsed in 1870 and also the circular wall could not been preserved. Likewise only remains are left from the frescos dating back to 1300. The wall paintings of the castle chapel (17th century) boasting Gothic pointed arch windows have also almost disappeared.

Castel Kaldiff has once been a rectangular construction, which seemed rather structureless outside. The north, west and east walls are in great parts still preserved.
Of course the ruin has been softly renewed and made accessible for the public. Also the path leading to the castle has been lined by dry stone walls and takes you to the final destination. Perfect seasons for visiting this place are spring and autumn. According to legends, at the castle there are several treasures that are buried, which are guarded by two dogs with fiery eyes. So no chance for sudden wealth :)
