Hike through the Tröpfltal valley

This walk takes us from Villa di Mezzo (Caldaro) through the Tröpfltal valley to the Mendola road.

We - that is to say two adults and two 8 and 6 year old kids - start our hike in Villa di Mezza (Mitterdorf), a district belonging to the municipality of Caldaro. From the parking space at the Piazza Major von Morandell square, our starting point, we walk past Kampan Castle and turn into the Via Garnellen. This road takes us to a field and forest path leading through vineyards and a small spelt field to the edge of the forest. We enter the forest and hear the murmur of the Tröpfltalbach brook - now the kids get excited so we hurry up.

On the edge of the forest there’s a rest area and viewpoint with wooden benches and a table - a small bridge leads over the brook. The green forest conveys a sense of freshness, the view opens up on the landscape dominated by vineyards and the village of Caldaro. We stay on the left side of the brook and walk past the bridge to the slope. The path no. 17 leads straight uphill through a small gorge with steep moss-covered rocks, flowers, blooming wild strawberries, a rich flora and a bubbly brook (at the time of our hike - it could dry out in summer).

Sometimes we enjoy a short break, the forest is a magical natural playground for the kids: dams have to be built and nature has to be discovered so rubber boots are an advantage. The path leads slightly to the right over the brook and continues steeply uphill until we reach the Mendola road. Now we can decide whether we follow the street to the Caldaro High Route and continue our hike to San Nicolò (St. Nikolaus) in Caldaro or to turn back along the same trail. We choose the latter and spend another few pleasant hours in the beautiful shady forest.
