Hike from the Passo Mendola to Rif. Oltradige hut

This mountain hike leads us to the central rise of the Mendola formation and is 16 km long.

We start at Caldaro, S. Antonio, where we find the valley station of the Mendola Funicular which was built more than 100 years ago. At the top of the Passo Mendola (nearly 1,350 m) we start in southern direction and take the marker no. 500. The asphalt road passes soon into crushed stones, we find our way through the wood. Quite a lot of inhabitants of Caldaro and Appiano have their summer huts in this wonderful area. After a break at the Enzianhütte mountain hut we continue through the woods and enjoy the pleasant shadow on the way which is mostly flat, only one short ascent we have to manage. Passing the Rif. Mezzavia (Halbweghütte) we carry on path no. 500 towards south.
After a turn we can see hut Romeno in front of us. A very nice place, where we enjoy something to drink and the beautiful landscape of meadows covered with flowers, also a small church which is called Maria Schnee is up there. The amazing view of the formation of Ortles until the Dolomites is a great reward! From this point it takes us only 20 minutes till we reach hut Oltradige. It is placed directly under Mount Roen, the mountain top of Roen can be reached on a Via Ferrata. Meanwhile it is afternoon and we may enjoy a clear view of Bassa Altesina and Strada del Vino.
