In Appiano autumn not only cares for a multicoloured landscape of vineyards, also the woods above the villages shine in colourful glory now at the end of October. Our walking tour starts in Predonico (Perdonig in German), easily accessible by car via the little mountain road from Appiano/Eppan. The parking space at the fire station is our starting point, we pass the church and the Wieser Restaurant. Following the marker no. 8, we first walk on the asphalt road towards Eisenstadt. Soon, after a bend, the path no. 11 branches off to the right which we follow uphill. After a while and a few bends later it joins the Alta Via di Appiano high route (no. 9).

Now we have reached 1,200 m asl. and follow the high route towards south (Masaccio). Here we are just beneath the mighty cliffs of the Monte Macaion (Gantkofel). Until here, our route proceeded on quite wide paths, now we have to walk on a narrower trail slightly downhill. The path no. 545 crosses the high route, we follow it to the Buchwald Tavern (permanently closed). It is located on a beautiful clearing with a fantastic panoramic view on Bolzano until the Dolomites. Along the path no. 10 and 8 we come back to Predonico again. In autumn it’s worth to start quite early in the morning because the sun soon hides behind the rocks of the Monte Macaion in the afternoon.
