In autumn, Lake Caldaro and its unique landscape of vineyards and apple trees enchant with its extraordinary blaze of colour. In fact, the mixed forests around the lake create a very romantic autumn atmosphere before the landscape finally falls into a deep winter sleep. It is impressive how beautiful even the grey month of November can be in the south of South Tyrol. Starting our hiking tour at the Geier restaurant in the north of the main parking space at Lake Caldaro, we follow the trail clockwise. On a sunny November day the temperatures in the south of South Tyrol can still be very pleasant and this tour is even more recommendable in autumn than on a hot summer day.
After a five-minutes walk towards north we turn right into a path that leads us to the road at Campi al Lago under the mountain ridge of Castelchiaro. Walking towards south, we continue our tour on asphalted streets, partly limited to traffic, enjoy the warming sun, the beautiful colours around us and the wonderful views to the lake. After about one kilometre we turn right into a straight road limited to traffic which leads us to the Wine Road ("Weinstrasse"), passing fruit orchards and the beautiful biotope of Lake Caldaro. At the end of the road we cross the main street and walk towards north to the small village San Giuseppe al Lago, partly on the famous Wine Trail ("wein.weg"), finally arriving at our starting point.
