This mountain tour with spectacular panoramic view on the Mendola mountain crest starts at the little parking space near the Kreuzstein tavern in Appiano (620 m a.s.l.). The path no. 546 leads uphill to the Buchwald tavern at 960 m a.s.l. (permanently closed) and continues steeply upwards to the small hut at the Pfaunboden. Shortly afterwards the forest path turns into a stony trail proceeding through a landscape of rugged rock faces on both sides. It leads us in a zigzag line to an iron stairway. Slightly further we exit the Piccola Forcella wind gap (1,703 m a.s.l.) and follow the signpost no. 547 to the next wind gap, the Bergner Kreuz (1,770 m a.s.l.). We continue our hike on the path no. 547 in a northerly direction to the Grande Forcella wind gap (Grande Forcella means big wind gap).

The path no. 536 winds its way steeply downhill through the wind gap and turns into a forest path. We follow the path towards south and reach the Pfaunboden again. The trail no. 546 leads us back to our starting point. This tour for experienced hikers fascinates with the impressive wind gaps between the precipitous rock faces and the breathtaking panoramic view on the Bolzano valley basin, the Dolomites and the Alpine divide.
