In Caldaro there’s the South Tyrolean Wine Academy, which skilfully passes on its well-founded knowledge about wine
The desire to acquire a know-how about wine can be a personal motivation or have a professional background. Caldaro, however, a wine village par excellence, provides the best contact point for all wine connoisseurs, sommeliers and people interested in this topic. It is a collaboration between the local wein.kaltern initiative and the South Tyrolean Sommelier Association with the aim to build a public consciousness for wine culture and to best share its knowledge with interested people.
One of the venerable residences near the Market Square in Caldaro was chosen as worthy seat for the South Tyrolean Wine Academy (Südtiroler Weinakademie). A skilled team of public speakers of the sommelier association provides a varied offer of seminars and events the whole year round, which is divided into three topics and two areas. Besides wine tastings, also events about beer, Speck and culinary pleasure as well as tailor-made courses for groups or businesses are offered. What all participants have in common is their great interest in the topic wine (and beer).
The three topics of the courses are wine, beer and culinary pleasure - a wide range of events of the South Tyrolean Wine Academy is dedicated to the wine, which made Caldaro world-famous. Also the topic of beer doesn't come up short and was added some time ago: Beer experts explain in workshops and culinary evenings the varieties and different aromas of the popular hop drink. Did you know, for example, that already 13,000 years ago beer was brewed in a cave in Israel?
The 3rd topic - culinary pleasure - is completely dedicated to wine and cooking and offers cookery courses targeting specific foods such as meat, the local bacon called "Speck", cheese and oil. The two above mentioned areas, however, include "Wine & Learning" for wine lovers and "Wine & Training". The teaching of future wine academics, also suited for sommeliers, consists of several seminars - the basic seminar is open also to interested people and wine novices. The entire training concludes with the examination and the award of the "Diploma of Wine & Spirits International".
