Frangarto is a little, calm spot of land extending at an altitude of about 250 m asl, only a few km from Bolzano. The village is a perfect starting point for cycling tours in the Val d’Adige or the Bassa Atesina. Also the cycling route to Bolzano, to the Bassa Atesina and to Merano go past this village.
The most famous building in the close surroundings is Castel Firmiano, which is particularly interesting as excursion destination. The inner courtyard and the other rooms of the castle host the main seat of the Messner Mountain Museum (MMM), one of the five mountain museums brought into being by Reinhold Messner. Humans and mountains are at the centre of this museum and are presented in permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions and various events. Another highlight on the forested hill of Frangarto is the Hochfrangart residence, in the garden of which the former owner collected various pieces of art. On request, he also presented them to the public. What you can see from afar is a huge, silver bowl that attracts the views of people passing by.
The church in the centre is dedicated to S. Giuseppe and has been constructed in neo-Gothic style. Also the Ansitz Pillhof, in which you can find a wine store and a restaurant, is an attractive historic building of the area. Frangarto, the village underneath the famous viticulture hill of Colterenzio, provides a view up to Merano, and is really worth a visit.
