Sustainable agriculture and fresh products straight from the farm
More and more farms in South Tyrol, including those along the Wine Road, are turning to organic farming and species-appropriate animal husbandry. They produce their food and agricultural products according to strict organic guidelines. Many of these farms sell their goods directly from the farm or offer them at farmers' markets in the surrounding villages. The range of products varies depending on the season:
- Monday: Terlano, San Paolo Appiano
- Tuesday: Caldaro (March to December), San Michele Appiano
- Wednesday: Ora, Salorno
- Thursday: Cornaiano
- Friday: Egna, Nalles
- Saturday: Caldaro (April to end of June, September to December), Bolzano
- Monday-Saturday: Bolzano (at the Piazza delle Erbe square)
A key association in South Tyrol is Bioland Südtirol, based in Terlano. Founded in 1991 by ten farmers, it now boasts more than 1,000 members. Its standards include active climate, soil, and nature conservation, promoting soil fertility, species-appropriate animal husbandry, the careful use of natural resources, and the production of high-quality food.
The ArGe Biofleisch Südtirol (Organic Meat South Tyrol), a consortium of South Tyrolean mountain farmers, practices suckler cow husbandry and manages its farms according to organic farming guidelines. They market their meat under the name BioBeef. The ever-expanding range of organic produce is complemented by organic apples and apple juice from the Biosüdtirol Agricultural Cooperative (Landwirtschaftliche Genossenschaft Biosüdtirol), organic shops like Naturalia in Bolzano and Merano, and initiatives such as the organic fruit and vegetable delivery service 'Biokistl Südtirol'.
Compliance with the strict guidelines is regularly monitored by inspection bodies.
