The largest Christmas market in Italy is also one of the oldest and most traditional: the Christmas market on the Piazza Walther square

The history of the Bolzano Christmas Market goes back to 1989, when the city of Nuremberg donated its Christmas market statute to the city of Bolzano. Bolzano took it over and opened its first Christmas market in 1991, which was immediately very popular. The combination of 80 festive wooden huts in Alpine style, the ambience of the Piazza Walther square with the imposing cathedral, gift ideas and the one or other hut with mulled wine and snacks in between has enchanted visitors every year since then, who come to Bolzano in their thousands on the weekends.
Over the years, the Bolzano Christmas market has expanded. In autumn 2025, the new WaltherPark was opened. The Viale della Stazione was closed to traffic and transformed into a pedestrian zone connecting Piazza Walther with the WaltherPark and the railway station. The adjacent station park – now called ‘Berloffa Park’ – was also redesigned, and the entire new area offers more space for the Christmas market. The ice rink, which used to be located on Piazza Municipio, is now set up directly in front of the WaltherPark.
The accompanying programme includes traditional concerts, a small railway and an old carousel as well as a varied children's programme. By the way: All 5 Original South Tyrolean Christmas Markets are Green Events, i.e. certified events that focus on sustainability. And so, every year on Thursday before the First Advent, the motto is: Welcome to Bolzano, welcome to the Christmas Market!
