Winter walk to the Wetterkreuz viewpoint

The Andriano Weather Cross, a viewpoint above the village, provides a view over the entire Adige Valley between Merano and Bolzano

It is a cold January day, and we want to see the winter landscape from above. The Weather Cross, known as Andrianer Wetterkreuz in German, is a well-known viewpoint above Andriano, and the path to it is a pleasant walk without any great difficulties or obstacles, ideal for a winter afternoon. Although the sky isn't blue, the fresh air feels good. We start our circular walk in the centre of Andriano, which is also easy to reach with the 202 bus from Terlano or Nalles.

We set off towards the church, passing the Andriano Winery and the parish church on our way to the large forest playground. The asphalt path now leads into the forest, and we are surrounded by the January silence. At the festival ground - a place for many summer celebrations, now in hibernation - the path continues to the Rio Gaido stream. Crossing the bridge, we reach the Adriano ice rink. A few laps on the ice would combine well with the walk - the rink is prepared.

We save this option for later and follow the stream straight ahead to a junction. The Andriano forest stretches out on the other side of the stream. The number 5 waymarker shows us the path towards Sirmiano. A forest track leads us through the woods, soon passing Tordilupo Castle. Now, the first views of the valley open up. Shortly before the Weather Cross, a small path leads us to a wooden bench, the ideal spot for a break and a photo. After that, it's only a few more metres.

There, the entire Adige Valley lies at our feet: to the left, the spa town of Merano, and to the right, the regional capital Bolzano. The view is impressive even with little snow. After our scenic break, path number 5 leads us back to the ice rink. Instead of turning right over the bridge, we turn left at the ice rink and walk through another section of woodland. We soon reach the car park by the swimming pool... and after about an hour, we arrive back in the village centre of Andriano.
