Castel Roncolo is a prominent, picturesque symbol of Bolzano, marking the entrance to the Sarentino Valley. This initially defensive structure, resting upon a steep, porphyry cliss, was commissioned and built by the noble family of Wangen in 1237. Also known as the Painted Castle, it is home to the most important, non-religious frescoes from the Middle-ages, depicting true legends, daily at the court, royal hunts as well as scenes from literature
