Lagrein

Red and rosè wines - named Lagrein Kretzer or Lagrein Rosato - are produced from the autochthonous red grape variety Lagrein

Besides Vernatsch, also Lagrein is one of South Tyrol's native red grape varieties, which result in excellent red and rosé wines. Lagrein, a natural cross between Vernatsch and Italian Teroldego, was already mentioned for the first time in a document from Termeno in 1379. Until the 19th century, presumably the White Lagrein was mainly grown along the Wine Road. The Red Lagrein was first mentioned in the ordering of the land by Michal Gaismair, a Tyrolean peasant leader, in 1525. Today, however, the name Lagrein refers to the red grape variety (Dark Lagrein).

Just like Pinot noir grapes, also Lagrein requires a Mediterranean climate: It grows particularly well on a deep, loamy soil. After the fermentation in a stainless steel tank, the red wine is stored for several months in a wooden oak barrel. Lagrein wines are full-bodied, dark ruby red in colour and have an aroma of violets, cherries and blackberries with a dark chocolate tasting finish. It is ideal with game, hearty meat dishes and roasts. Hard cheese is also served with the full-bodied wine.

Serving temperature: 16 to 18 degrees C

The rosé wines produced from the Lagrein grapes, however, are called Lagrein Kretzer or Lagrein Rosato. They have a pale ruby-red colour with salmon-coloured reflexes and a very fresh aroma. The aromatic and elegant wines go particularly well with savoury starters, white and smoked meat and are - cooled - the perfect companion to enjoy a beautiful summer night on the Wine Road.

Serving temperature: 12 to 14 degrees C
