Castelvecchio

From Castelvecchio (612 m a.s.l.), you have a great panoramic view on Lake Caldaro

Castelvecchio is a little village that boasts a special atmosphere. As the highest-located village of the municipality, it is isolated from the centre and all other parts of Caldaro. On a little terrace of fruit orchards and vineyards, there is a small group of buildings, in the middle of which there are three taverns. Citizens of Castelvecchio need to overcome about 6 km (towards Caldaro) to go shopping or attend a school.

The church of Castelvecchio is dedicated to S. Vigilio and is situated in a rather exposed place. It dates back to the Gothic period, its present form, however, dates back to the 14th century. On the facades of the tower you can admire the oldest wall paintings of Caldaro, depicting S. Cristopher and dating back to 1320. The church is located very close to a viewpoint that is a particularly popular walking destination. From here you can enjoy a fabulous view on the lake and its surroundings. In the area you can also visit another popular destination, that is the St Peter’s Basilica, a ruin boasting interesting historic details. It belongs to the stations of the peace path that starts in Caldaro and leads to this place.

Castelvecchio is also popular with hikers and cyclists. In the forest, there are several trails and paths that are lined by special sites. The Rastenbachklamm gorge is a well-frequented destination for families, the gorge and the water are highly refreshing and provide an adventuresome day.
