Wineries

Local farmers provide wineries on the Wine Road with grapes.

South Tyrol boasts several corporate wineries, private wineries as well as a number of small but mighty wineries run by farmers themselves.
Private wineries have existed for several hundred years now. Even the smaller wineries run by farmers have constantly been handed on from one generation to another.

Most of the corporate wineries, however, were founded after the year 1905. After rather difficult times in the beginnings they have turned into fairly well organised cooperatives nowadays. Most farmers provide these large wineries with grapes and earn some money according to the quantity and quality.

The "Freie Weinbauern Südtirol" (free vintners South Tyrol) are a relatively young association of owners of wineries, who succeeded in laying in the their products. Since the beginning of 2000 this association has been continually growing and the professional production of quality wines gained in importance.

Local wineries offer guided tours and degustations on weekly basis as well as on demand.
