Spring hike to Castelfeder

Between Villa and Ora our ascent up to the magic hill of Castelfeder starts.

It’s March and already at that time of the year, the sun is strong enough to heat up the porphyry rocks. Castelfeder is an ideal walking destination also in months like March, April or November because here the sun really can be enjoyed.

Where the Val d’Adige Cycle Route runs for a section parallel to the Brennero Road, the path up to the hill of Castelfeder branches at the opposite side of the street. After a short section along an asphalt road, the route proceeds along a stony forest path on the right. The information panels inform us, that we hike in the nature reserve “Biotop Castelfeder”. The delicate verdure of the broadleaf forest are in contrast to the strong colours of the first spring flowers.

Slowly the path ascends and we reach a flatter landscape with still bald woods and dry meadows. A junction follows, the signpost tells us that we have to walk 10 more minutes until the Roman castle ruins. Arrived at the top we enjoy a fantastic view on the South Tyrolean Bassa Atesina and the beautiful antique wall remains. On our way back we make a side trip towards north and Ora, and come back via the junction at the signpost to the parking space. By the way: there are several paths proceeding to Castelfeder, for example from Montagna or Pinzano.
