One may not believe it: the maize from which the popular Polenta (Plent, in dialect) is made along the wine road has its origin in America. In 1573 it was first mentioned also here and after a while it was cultivated on the fields of the local farmers. Especially in the 19th and 20th century the Plent became one of the indispensable foods on the daily menu. It could be used in many ways and the costs of the food were bearable (self-sufficiency).
In the middle of the 20th century a new turnaround followed: the maize fields were replaced by the monocultures visible today. Fruit and wine were now the goods with which the farmer obtained his purchase. What followed was a combination of present and past: the work in the orchards and in the vineyards often took place far away from home. So the so-called “Plentnkessel” (a large kettle) had to come along and the main meals were cooked in it on an open fire.
Even today some farmers still celebrate this old custom. Polenta and sausage are offered during the harvest in the vineyard. By the way – it is also allowed to eat with your fingers, this makes the Plent taste much better!
