Parish Church of San Paolo Appiano

Due to its size, the Conversion of St. Paul Church of San Paolo is known as the “Cathedral in the Countryside”

San Paolo Appiano (St. Pauls Eppan) has such a majestic parish church that it seems to dominate the entire landscape and village. This "Cathedral in the Countryside" should tell of wealth and power, because already in the 12th century San Paolo was the richest parish in South Tyrol and the original parish of the Oltradige area. In the 15th century, the village became the main village of the municipality of Appiano. The present church was started around 1460 and was only completed in 1647 by the church tower with a baroque onion dome. It rises stately 85 metres into the sky. Its architectural and artistic details make the Conversion of St. Paul Parish Church in San Paolo Appiano one of the most important religious buildings in South Tyrol!

It is a late-Gothic hall church, which appears uniform inside despite the different builders and phases. There, the magnificent high altar and the two side altars by the Innsbruck painter and sculptor Michael Stolz, as well as the statue of the Madonna with the Child Jesus from the 15th century and the coats of arms of noble families are particularly fascinating. The bells were of course adapted to the large volume of the church tower, the largest weighs almost 5 tons. Already in 1952 it was described as the "most beautiful and most famous ringing of South Tyrol".
