Mount Macaion

The summit of Mt. Macaion (1,866 m a.s.l.) above Appiano represents the northernmost pillar of the Mendola Ridge

By its bend, Mt. Macaion (Gantkofel, in German - Monte Macaion, in Italian) directs the Mendola Ridge towards north-west and opens it up towards the area of Merano and the Palade Pass. Its peak can be easily recognised by the radio transmitters near the summit cross at 1,866 m a.s.l.

The Appiano High Route passes beneath the striking cliffs of Mt. Macaion. The 3-hour long summit tour, however, starts at the Buchwald tavern (closed) above San Michele in Appiano, leads to the Grande Forcella wind gap and to the plateau of the panoramic mountain. The magnificent view includes the Dolomites, the Sarentino Alps, the Ortles Alps with "King Ortles" and the Brenta Group in the Trentino. What is also impressive is the view on the entire Valle dell'Adige valley at your feet.
