The “Museion” in Bolzano is a construction which puts emphasis on the provincial capital of South Tyrol. The glass facade represents trasparency and openness, which is also perceivable inside the building. Moreover it symbolises the connection between historic district and new town. A studio in close vicinity is offered to artists during their stay, which gives birth to the Museion as art studio. The Museion has already existed since 1985 and was founded by a private association with the assistance of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. In 1987 it moved into the premises in Via Sernesi and in the early days it aimed at stimulating arts and hence artists between Ala and Kufstein, so to speak the historical Tyrol from 1900. In the early 90s people started to compare Italian arts to German arts. In 1991 the term “Museion” emerged.
From 2000 Alois Lageder has been president of the “Museum for modern and contemporary art”. In the course of time an optic and contentual opening has been perceivable and new projects are continuously being integrated into the Museion. “The little Museion” in the Don Bosco district, the cooperation with the city library Bolzano, the city theatre, the University of Bolzano and the EURAC are only some of the initiatives which have been implemented.
Still today the Museion association holds office in cooperation with the Autonomous Province of Bolzano and is financed via membership dues and sponsorship (both private and public). In autumn 2007 a new initiative has been originated. “Museion mobile” drives across the province and offers presentations on creativity, arts and personal coaching in public institutions like kindergardens, various schools, youth centres, education facilities and culture associations. The Museion is aimed at every generation, also young fellow citizens, for whom there is an action course as well as several other offers, enabling them to experience the museum in a playful manner.
