Piazza Walther

Walther von der Vogelweide - a monument for the popular minne singer is located on THE piazza in the centre.

First this piazza beared the name of king Maximilian Joseph I, afterwards it was named after archduke John from Austria, that is to say “Johannesplatz”. And since 1901 it has been named after the popular Medieval minne singer.

The statue of minne singer Walther von der Vogelweide is located in the middle of a fountain on Piazza Walther. It has been designed by the artist Heinrich Natter from Val Venosta in 1889 and is made of pure white marble from Lasa. In 1935 the fascists arranged for the statue to be shifted into the Rosenegger park. In 1985, however, the statue has been taken back to its original location.

By the way, in daily life Piazza Walther is a meeting place for all those who would like to sit comfortably in front of a Café. This is also where the Christmas market and many more events take place.
