Corno Bianco
The Corno Bianco (2,316 m asl) is a striking mountain, not only due to its special light rock colour of white Sarl Dolomite.
Close to the Corno Bianco, there is the famous Rio delle Foglie canyon, which is above all, bot not only, an interesting site for geologists. The so-called canyon of South Tyrol can be reached on foot and is completed by a little museum, the “Geoparc Aldino Redagno”, providing interesting information. Beside its brother Corno Nero, also the Corno Bianco is lined by the European long-distance hiking trail E5.
The summit of the Corno Bianco can be reached quite easy, as the respective parking space is located at 2,000 m asl at Passo Oclini. Also underneath the summit, there is a circular hiking trail, on the east side of which you can enjoy a fabulous view on the Latemar mountains.
Between the Corno Bianco and Corno Nero, there is the small but mighty skiing area Passo d’Oclini, which is above all ideal for families.
Corno Bianco and Corno Nero are a stone’s throw away from each other, about 1,000 m. The difference between these unequal twins can be explained from a geological viewpoint. In other words, a break in the earth crust, so to speak the so-called line of Trodena, is the reaso for the fact that the Corno Bianco has been elevated about 1,000 m. The layers on the porphyry have been ablated in the meantime, so now the Corno Nero has got more or less the same altitude than his “brother”.
