Twenty millions of history of earth at one glance!
Accessible both from Aldino and Radegno, the Bletterbach gorge is located at the foot of the Corno Bianco, which beside the Corno Nero is well seen from all over the Oltradige. The gorge is considered to be a natural monument and it tells a story of history of earth, without saying a word. Moreover the canyon is an educational adventure park and is also a perfect destination for a hike with children. The canyon provides an insight into the innards of mountains and it has steadily been undercut for a period of about 15,000 years. Due to the fact that the rock layers are still intact, it is possible to draw conclusions regarding the period of time of 150 million years ago.
In Valgardena sandstone further imprints of plants have been found, while muscles, snails and cephalopods reveal reliable information on times when the sea still dominated this area.
Moreover a visitors’ centre provides geologic information on the “Geoparc Bletterbach” and offers workshops for adults and children.
An educational trail informs about animals having their habitat in the surroundings of the Bletterbach gorge and leads hikers to the Lahneralm alpine pasture and back. Along the path there are several information panels which describe different rock layers.
