Archaeology Museum
To see the legendary Iceman Ötzi you have to travel to Bolzano.
He is considered to be one of the most famous citizens of South Tyrol. The Archeology Museum of Bolzano shows interesting archeological findings from the surroundings and sometimes there are also special exhibitions attracting a large number of visitors.
However, THE attraction of the museum is of course the Iceman, called Oetzi. The couple Simon from Nuremberg discovered the well-preserved mummy in 1991 at the Hauslabjoch. He is considered to be 5,300 years old and since the day of his finding, investigations and researches are under way. The Iceman is “lodged” in a seperate chamber.
First the Mummy of the Similaun glacier caused a controversy between Austria and Italy. Of course both states insisted on the mummy and finally the Iceman has been laid to rest in Bolzano, as the distance to the university hospital of Innsbruck is tolerable also for Austrian and international researchers.
