San Giacomo in Castelaz
The small but mighty church of San Giacomo in Castelaz is located in a special place in Termeno.
At the entrance of Termeno you can immediately see the hill topped by a small group of houses and a small but mighty church.
This church is dedicated to San Giacomo and dates back to the Romanesque period. In 1214 it has been mentioned for the first time in documents. According to legends, this church has been built on the remnants of a Romanesque Isis temple.
Worth seeing and also the subject matter of guided tours are its frescoes. In the apsis on the side of the left, Romanesque nave, you can see the some human-animalic figures, representing the demons. Moreover there are the Twelve Apostles as well as Jesus Christ with the four evangelists. These paintings, however, have probably been painted around 1250.
The right nave dates back to the Gothic period and presents frescoes illustrating Ambrosius, the helper od Johannes, a master of Brunico.
Guided tours are offered from March to the beginning of November, from 10 am to 6 pm.
