S. Stefano church

The S. Stefano church of Pinzano boasts a beautiful winged altar by Hans Klocker.

The village of Pinzano belongs to the municipality of Montagna and is characterised by the famous S. Stefano church, boasting a winged altar by Hans Klocker. Before there was a church of wood or stone.

Around 1200 a church in Romanesque construction style has been built, like we know it today. In the period of time around 1400 this church was converted to Gothic style.

Since the 15th century the S. Stefano church is decorated with the winged altar of the artist Hans Klocker. He was the owner of an altar atelier and was elected mayor of his city.

A winged altar is called like this because of its virtue. Two wings decorated with further pieces of art are hang next to the picture of the main altar. They are closed in the fasting period, covering the illustration of the main picture. A winged altar used to be mounted on a step or a socket, which is also decorated with wood carvings. Also in Pinzon it is exactly like this.

The altar is by the way also one of the five most beautiful of Tyrol. In the middle the following scene is illustrated: the patron saints of the church, the Saints Stefano and Laurentius, stand next the to the Blessed Mother who passes the apple - the ideogram of the world - to her child.

The church of Pinzano boasts a monument of art that casts a spell over a large number of visitors.
