S. Paolo parish church

The large parish church testifies the presence of numerous aristocrats in S. Paolo and surroundings.

Due to its considerable size, the parish church of San Paolo is literally translated called “rural cathedral”. In fact the constructors also persue the goal that the church should also give utterance to their wealth and strenght. In the 15th century, S. Paolo was the main village of Appiano. Many aristocrats settled down in this area, a fact that can still be seen on the facades and bays of the village. Also the large number of castles and residences in the surroundings bear witness of these times.

However, the wealthy aristocrats wanted to give utterance to their prosperity and for this reason they had many large churches been built. The church tower, combining Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance elements, dates back to the 15th to 17th century. Thus everyone knew where the most prosperous aristocrats lived.
Of course also the bells correspond to the size of the church and the largest bell, which is even considered to be the second largest bell throughout Tyrol, boasts a weight of 4,984 kg. Its deep sound can be heard all over the Oltradige region.
