Herz Jesu Feuer

Fires in honour of Jesus

"Herz-Jesu-Feuer"

Approximately in the middle of June, South Tyrol boasts a special kind of event. High up in the mountains, huge figures are made out of fire, the so-called "Herz-Jesu-Feuer" (literally: fires for the heart of Jesus). Beautiful crosses and hearts of fire and glowing chains are seen all along the mountain ridges.

This tradition dates actually back to the year 1796, when the Tyroleans so bitterly fought for their freedom and pledged their troth to the heart of Jesus if they would win the fight. Well, the fight was won by the Tyroleans indeed and still today, on a special night in the middle of June, they make these huge fires to honour the heart of Jesus.
