Castelvecchio is a little village that boasts a special atmosphere. As highest-located village of the municipality, it stretches away from the centre and other villages belonging to Caldaro. On a little terrace of fruit orchards and vineyards, there is a small group of buildings, in the middle of which there are two taverns and a forest tavern. Citizens of Castelvecchio need to overcome about 6 km (towards Caldaro) to go shopping or attend a school.
The church of Castelvecchio is dedicated to S. Vigilio and is situated in a rather exposed place. It dates back to the Gothic period, its present-day form, however, originates in the 14th century. On the facades of the tower you can admire the oldest wall paintings of Caldaro, illustrating S. Cristopher and dating back to 1320. The church is located very close to a viewpoint that is a particularly popular walking destination. From here you can enjoy a fabulous view on the lake and its surroundings. In the surroundings you can also see another popular destination, that is the St Peter’s Basilica, a ruin boasting interesting historic details. It belongs to the stations of the peace path that starts in Caldaro and leads to this place.
Castelvecchio is also popular with hikers and cyclists. In the forest, there are several trails and paths that are lined by special sites. The Rastenbachklamm gorge is a well-frequented destination for families, the gorge and the water are highly refreshing and provide an adventuresome day.
