The promenades have got a good record!
Above all two of them, so to speak the Guncina and Sant'Oswaldo promenade, characterised by a meridional flair and great viewpoints. Ascending from the periphery via serpentines you reach these high paths, which are lined by magnolias, Chusan palms, holly and cork oaks, agave plants and other meridional plants. Those who look, will see: the city of Bolzano from on high conveys a feeling of width and grandeur.
The Guncina promenade ranges from the quarter of Gries towards San Genesio and is dedicated to archduke Heinrich von Habsburg V.
Particularly in the 19th century Greis was very popular as health resort with aristocrats and gentry families. The promenades as well as numerous beautiful buildings date back to these times. Still today the Guncina promenade is one of the most important and beautiful greens in the city and is warmly recommendable as a pleasant walk.
The Sant'Oswaldo promenade is located in the quarter Sant'Antonio and Santa Maddalena and takes you to numerous viewpoints. This paths has been established in 1908 and extended to santa Maddalena. This path is lined by a mixed forest of downy oaks, fern-lead beeches and bushes from meridional realms. Two towers of porphyry conglomerate, similar to a pyramide, soar from the forest. These are called "Wilde Mander" and are typical for the Sant'Oswaldo promenade. As you might imagine, its name derives from the minne singer Oswald von Wolkenstein.
However, there are not only these two promenades in the periphery.
The "Lungo Talvera promenade" lines the homonymous river and is one of the green oasis of Bolzano, which is perfect both for adults and children, as there are children's playgrounds, sports facilities for football, baseball and softball and wide meadows along the river which provide space for movement in the heart of the city. There is even a cycling path.
A new promenade is the Virgolo promenade, which leads past castles and residences, for example Castel Flavon.
