Piazza Vittoria

The Piazza Vittoria is located close to the city centre. A monument decorates this Piazza.

The Victory monument is a considerable witness of the time of the World Wars and the handover of the little country by Italy. The monument is located on Piazza Vittoria in front of the Talvera bridge and is a remarkable construction of Zandobbio, which is a marmor coming from Bergamo. It was constructed in the 1926/28, when the fascist regime arranged the construction of a monument that should remind of the conquerors of South Tyrol. The architect Marcello Piancentini integrated in his piece of art many fascistic symbols, which still show up.

The majestic construction in Bolzano, as mentioned above, reminds on the handover of South Tyrol by Italy. In these times it was important to the people of the other language to “Italianise” South Tyrol. The attitude of these times is reflected in this huge monument. Of course this historical monument has still been subject for debate. At the beginning of the 21st century (2002) the Piazza Vittoria has been called “Piazza della Pace” (peace), but has soon been renamed Piazza Vittoria.

The Victory monument decorated the homonymous piazza, on which every week the Saturday market takes place.
