Piazza delle Erbe & Co

A range of little historical places characterises the city of Bolzano.

> Piazza delle Erbe
The Piazza delle Erbe is a very popular place between Via dei Portici and Via del Museo. This is where vegetables, flowers, and in autumn also roadsted chestnuts are sold on business days. On Saturday afternoon, Sundays and holidays the market is closed.

> Piazza Municipio
The Piazza Municipio is located in front of the city hall, as the Italian name of the Piazza reveals. It has been built in the neo-baroque epoque and is surrounded by historical buildings which provide a unique flair to end of the Via del Museo.

> Via Bottai
Visitors of Via Bottai can admire beautiful old buildings. One of these has been the former administration centre of Emeror Maximilian I. Today there is the Museum of Nature, which is very interesting for families. The old original wrought-iron shields of the taverns have been preserved and transform Via Bottai into a special place in the centre of Bolzano.

> Via Argentieri
Via Argentieri is the road that goes off the city moat along the southern side of the Bolzano. It is a typical alley of Bolzano, which tells the visitor much about historical construction methods. The Mercantile building (1708 - 1727), also called Mercantile palais, today hosts the mercantile museum and is one of the splendid buildings of this alley. A narrow passageway to the “Portici” reveals the system in which these houses have been built.

> Vicolo Dr. Streiter
The Vicolo Dt. Streiter corresponds with the pathway of the northern city moat of the ancient city of Bolzano. Characteristic for this alley is above all the passage under the “Zallingerturm”, two pointed arches and ancient marmor benches. This is the northern side of the old townhall. By the way, Dr. Joseph Streiter was major of the city of Bolzano and lived in the 19th century.

The oldest area of Bolzano is located round the Vicolo della Pesa, which connects the Via dei Portici with the Piazza del Grano where, as the Italian name reveals, the corn market used to take place.

Via della Mostra, however, is lined by pompous palaces, which were built in the Renaissance period.
