The first settlement in this rather fenny valley basin was formed near to the place where today the Cathedral of Bolzano is found. At the time there probably stood a castle called “Bozen auf dem Virgl” (literally: Bolzano on the Virgl). Bavarian patriarchs, Rhaetians and Nordic Lombards lived in this area, one after the other.
Today the historic city centre is a popular place, inviting for some exclusive shopping or a relaxing strolling-around-the-city. Well-kept house façades, interesting buildings and narrow winding alleys combine to create a special atmosphere. And restaurants, inns and cafés are the ideal places to recover and relax!
Bolzano is accessible by bus or train and obviously there are parking sites and areas near the city.
Slightly outside the city centre you will find a quiet peaceful area boasting trees and parks. This is Bolzano Paese (literally: the “village” of Bolzano), where old houses with rich green twiners climbing up their walls delight the visitors. Narrow alleys and ancient stone walls add to this special flair and from the first moment you will feel secure and, well, at home.
